Today I am coming to you from my porch with an impromptu video for you.
It’s a little vulnerable sharing this because I’m not polished or rehearsed, but I think the message is important.
So often we see people doing yoga, showing off their toned abs, or morning smoothie on instagram and think that getting the body we want is all about doing things perfectly OR that people who do reach their goals have some superpower that prevents them from having to struggle as much as we do.
The truth is, getting up and making a smoothie every day, avoiding the candy dish at the office, and soaking the damn beans, cooking quinoa etc etc is not always easy.
And it’s not because the technical piece is tricky, and I honestly don’t think healthy eating or cooking needs to be hard.
What IS challenging though is doing all those things when you are tired, stressed, overwhelmed or in the midst of a MONSTER craving and can’t seem to win the internal battle with the baked goods staring at you from behind the glass at your favorite bakery or grocery store.
In this video I show you exactly how I get myself out of a binge and turn things around when all I want is sugar, fat and carbs.
I hope you can use the strategy I outline in the video as a lifeline when you find yourself in one of those “aw f$*# it” moments where you could care less about kale, whole grains, and carrots and you just want to eat ALL the things…NOW.
I also want to say that if your current eating behaviors feel way out of control and slowing down, going easy on yourself, and mixing in some soul food doesn’t cut it just yet, DO NOT give up hope.
Finding peace in our eating habits and freedom in your relationship with food takes time. Start practicing these tools and little by little you will notice that things start to shift.
There is an incredible magic in releasing the judgement about what you are doing and simply allowing yourself some space to move through it.
I’d Love to hear from you…
In the comments below I’d love to hear your feedback – is this type of video helpful for you? Do you ever find that when you start eating sugar, bread, or junk-y foods you crave more of them and have a hard time stopping?
Is this NOT an issue for you right now? If so, do you have some tips or tricks that you use that you’d be willing to share?
xoxo
Thank you so much for sharing your vulnerability with us, Krissy. Lovely video and lovely message. <3
Thanks for the reply Jillian! It’s taken me a long time to be willing to share my imperfections with the world and not feel like it should all look a certain way. Trying to be perfect and then punishing yourself when you’re not does.not.work. Im so glad this different perspective is helpful! And thanks for helping me feel glad I shared it with the world! This is the real work in action 🙂 xoxo
Krissy –
You’re still perfect to me even with some minor imperfections. A very helpful video, my sweetness! Thank you for sharing this with all of us. I am going to leave my desk now and bundle up for a walk down the beach!
xoxoxox
Thanks Kathy! Thanks so much for the feedback and enjoy your walk down the beach! Sounds fantastic! xoxo
Thank you for that, it was really really helpful. I, too, am practicing changing my relationship with food AND myself. I love that you call nourishing yourself with something other than food, primary food. I am going to adopt that lingo. …and I am learning perfection is highly overrated 🙂
You’re so very welcome Cathy! Ahh YES! Thanks for catching that! This is a term I use with my clients but realized I just snuck it in there in this video! Glad you got the meaning. Primary food is what fills us up, nourishes and sustains us that isn’t food you eat (think: a walk in nature, deep breathing, a belly laughing phone convo with a best friend, movement, art, inspiration, a hug right when you need it…). Often when a craving for food comes it’s actually a primary food craving in disguise! You’ve got me thinking that I should do some videos about how to tell the difference! This was changed everything for me when it comes to food and my relationship with it. I hope it helps you too! Thanks so much for your comment! xoxo
Hi Krissy! I was so happy to find an email from you today. Watching the video and listening to you, was like being with a good friend…very honest and vulnerable. I have been feeling the same way. The time change is always very difficult to adjust to and sends my mind and body to a slow halt, while I try to adjust to the advent of winter. I was at my mom’s today, sitting in front of a lovely bowl of homemade soup and all Icould think about was the fact that I know she has potato chips in the pantry and I want to eat the whole bag. I knew that if I started eating them, there would be no bottom at the end of the bag…and I would count them as my vegetable for the day. I resisted, but I am still thinking about diving in tomorrow. Baking a potato right now with some sea salt and a little grated cheese…we will see. Love you and thank you for the video! Xo
Hi Susan! Thanks so much for your comment. I love what you pointed out here – what to do when the bag of chips (cookies, candy, etc) seems to be CALLING YOU from the other room! You did a phenomenal job here! Typically when a craving like that comes on that is quick (rather than gradual) and super specific (aka a certain type of ice cream, potato chip, chocolate etc) and isn’t satisfied by a nourishing meal (soup etc) it’s a craving for primary food. You did exactly what I would advise a client of mine to do: slow down, shift your attention to the present, and if it still lingers upgrade your craving – in this case you nailed it with the baked potato! Bravo!
Krissy, I also love how you shared your vulnerability! Maybe video blogging is a win win for you and your following! I find I can get out of grocery store most times without purchasing, but the craving will come back night after night. Sometimes you just have to endure. Funny thing happens though, I find after a few bites it really wasn’t what I needed or wanted. It tastes good but still I can actually stop in a reasonable time frame, Just like you did! Still have the weight on but each day just dialing in more and more! Love you and all you have to offer.
Thanks for the encouragement Gina! And thanks so much for sharing your experience here. This is absolutely beautiful! I love your awareness and ability to trust yourself. This is worth its weight in gold! I remember getting to a point where I decided “freedom” wasn’t eating “whatever I want” but having the ability to CHOOSE: what to have, how much, when I want to stop, etc. And this takes time and attention and a willingness to get it wrong. Congrats on all you do everyday to improve your relationship with food. No effort in this direction is ever wasted. xoxo
Can you be more specific about the content of your article? After reading it, I still have some doubts. Hope you can help me.
Your point of view caught my eye and was very interesting. Thanks. I have a question for you.
Good day! Do you know if they make any plugins to assist with SEO?
I’m trying to get my site to rank for some targeted keywords but I’m not seeing very good success.
